HOW TO PREPARE MATCHA TEA
Matcha tea is a Japanese Green tea powder. It is used across Japan and many other places in the world because of its remarkable health benefits. It is present in a powdered form due to which you are consuming the leaves instead of the extracted water.
There are many ways to make this drink. At the moment, we are going to tell you that how to prepare matcha tea in two famous forms, i.e., Usucha and Koicha.
Usucha Ingredients
- 1½ teaspoons matcha powder
- 2 ounces hot water
Method
- First of all, you have to sift 1½ scoop of matcha powder into a small tea bowl.
- Place a sifter in the tea bowl and measure the powdered tea. Only use 1½ teaspoon of matcha.
- Gently tap the sifter into the bowl to make matcha in a smooth form.
- Pour hot water into the bowl but very slowly so that no clumping of matcha is made.
- Mix the tea at a rapid speed for 20 to 30 seconds by using a chasen. A chasen is known as the bamboo whisk which has been made especially for preparing Usucha tea. Don’t use a metal fork at all.
- Now pour the tea into the teacup and drink it within seconds. Usucha must not be brewed like other tea.
Koicha Ingredients
- Three teaspoons matcha powder
- 2 ounces hot water
Method
- You need to sift three matcha tea powder scoops in a small tea bowl. Put a strainer into the small tea bowl and measure the matcha. If you don’t have scoops, then measure three teaspoons of matcha powder into the bowl. Tap the strainer to sift the tea powder in a bowl. It will help in keeping out the clumps.
- Just pour 2 ounces of hot water into the tea bowl now but gently. The water should be at 75 to 80°C.
- It is the time to mix up the matcha tea with water rapidly. You need to use the chasen and move it in a circular motion but at a fast speed. Fork or any other steel material must not do mixing. You should only use chasen as it will affect the aroma and flavor of matcha tea. Keep stirring till you get a thick paste of it.
- When the Koicha tea becomes thick, then you have to add more water to the teacup. The water should be hot. You need to use the chasen again and move it in circular motions. You have to keep stirring till you get thin tea. However, it will not be as thin as Usucha. Koicha is a bit darker and thicker than it.
- At the moment, you have to drink this tea immediately. In case you will wait longer than the powder will set down at the bottom of the teacup.

Chasen is a whisker that is readily available from the stores where you can buy whisk matcha.
You can use matcha in both the above forms. Each tea form only tastes different, but the benefits will remain same.
